Screen Time May Affect How Children See and Focus, New Study Finds

Screens have become such a routine part of childhood that conversations about “screen time” often focus on one question: How many hours is too many?

But new research suggests the answer may be more complicated than simply counting minutes.

A new study published August 29, 2026, in Scientific Reports examined how daily screen use relates to visual attention and visual processing in children between the ages of 4 and 9. The researchers found that greater screen time was associated with lower overall contrast sensitivity and with differences in how certain aspects of visual attention related to age.

The findings do not prove that screens cause changes in children’s vision or attention. They do, however, add another piece to a growing body of research suggesting that what children spend their time looking at may be connected to how their developing brains learn to process the visual world around them.

What Did the Researchers Study?

Researchers from the University of Louisville, Brown University, Columbia University and other institutions studied 72 children between 4 and 9 years old.

Parents reported how much screen time their children typically had each day. In this group, children averaged approximately 1.67 hours of screen use per day, with reported use ranging from about half an hour to 4.5 hours per day.

The children then completed several laboratory tests designed to measure two important abilities:

Visual selective attention is the ability to focus on relevant visual information while ignoring distractions.

Contrast sensitivity is the ability to distinguish an object from its background when the difference in brightness or color is subtle. It helps us recognize objects and details even when they do not stand out sharply.

Rather than asking parents whether their children seemed distracted, the researchers directly measured children's performance on these visual tasks.

That is an important distinction. Much of the previous research connecting screen use and childhood attention has relied on questionnaires completed by parents or teachers.

More Screen Time Was Associated With Lower Contrast Sensitivity

One of the clearest findings involved contrast sensitivity.

Researchers found that greater daily screen use was associated with lower overall contrast sensitivity.

The effect was described as modest, but it appeared across the different visual channels researchers tested.

In practical terms, contrast sensitivity is part of our ability to detect visual information when an object does not dramatically stand out from its surroundings.

Importantly, the researchers are not saying that screen time is making children unable to see properly. This was an association found within a relatively small research sample.

But the result raises an interesting question: Could the amount of time children spend looking at highly controlled, bright and visually stimulating digital environments be related to how their developing visual systems process subtler information in the physical world?

More research will be needed to answer that.

Screen Time Was Also Related to Visual Attention, but the Results Were Complicated

The attention results were not nearly as simple as “more screens equal worse attention.”

Children completed different types of visual search tasks in which they had to locate particular objects among distractions.

Researchers found that the relationship between age and performance differed depending on screen exposure, the difficulty of the task and whether children were processing differences based on color or luminance, meaning differences in brightness.

Luminance-based processing appeared particularly sensitive to differences in screen exposure. Color-based visual search development was generally more consistent across different amounts of screen use.

In some circumstances, greater screen exposure was even associated with better performance among younger children.

That is why the researchers themselves concluded that screen exposure does not appear to be uniformly beneficial or uniformly detrimental. Instead, it may interact with different visual and attentional processes in different ways.

That nuance matters.

A child playing an interactive educational game, video chatting with a grandparent and watching an endless stream of short videos may all technically be having “screen time,” but those experiences are very different.

This particular study measured duration. It was not designed to determine whether different types of media produce different developmental effects.

There Are Important Limitations

Parents should not interpret this study as evidence that an extra hour on a tablet will damage a child's eyesight or attention.

The research was cross-sectional, meaning researchers looked at children at one point in time rather than following them for several years.

Because of that, it cannot establish cause and effect.

It is possible that screen exposure influences attention. But it is also possible that children with different attentional characteristics are more attracted to screens or are given screens more frequently.

Screen time was also reported by caregivers rather than measured automatically, which introduces the possibility of inaccurate estimates. There were relatively few children in the highest-screen-use groups, and some of the statistical findings became weaker when researchers analyzed screen time differently.

Larger, long-term studies will be needed to understand what is actually causing these associations.

The Bigger Lesson May Be About Balance

Interestingly, this research comes at a time when pediatric experts are also moving toward a more nuanced discussion of children and technology.

In its updated 2026 policy, the American Academy of Pediatrics describes children's technology use as part of a broader digital ecosystem rather than something that can always be understood through a single screen-time number.

The AAP emphasizes considering what children are doing on screens and, just as importantly, what screen use may be replacing, including sleep, physical activity, family interaction and other developmentally important experiences.

Its updated Family Media Plan recommends practical steps such as establishing screen-free areas and times, turning off autoplay and unnecessary notifications, choosing higher-quality content and deliberately leaving room for activities such as reading, outdoor play, hobbies and family games.

That may be one of the most useful lessons parents can take from this new research.

The goal does not have to be eliminating technology.

It is making sure technology doesn't become the default for every quiet moment.

Making More Room for Screen-Free Storytime

Reading is one of the simplest alternatives families can build into that balance.

A physical picture book asks something very different of a child than a tablet or phone.

Children turn pages at their own pace. They examine illustrations. They listen to language. They search for details. They imagine what isn't explicitly shown. And when a parent, grandparent or other loved one reads with them, the experience becomes social as well as educational.

A Few Screen-Free Swaps Families Can Try

Instead of automatically reaching for a screen during downtime, families can experiment with simple replacements:

  • Keep a basket of favorite books somewhere children can easily reach them.
  • Establish a screen-free reading period before bed.
  • Take books along for car rides, restaurants and waiting rooms.
  • Let children draw scenes or characters from a story after reading it.
  • Encourage independent outdoor play and exploration.
  • Build puzzles, play board games or create something together.
  • Have grandparents or distant family members record favorite stories for children to listen to when they are apart.

None of these activities requires completely removing digital media from family life.

They simply ensure that screens aren't crowding out everything else.

What Parents Should Take Away From the New Research

This new study doesn't provide a magic number for the “correct” amount of screen time.

It gives us something potentially more useful.

Children's visual attention and visual processing are still developing throughout childhood, and screen exposure appears to be associated with some of those developmental differences.

Scientists still need to determine why those associations exist, which kinds of screen use matter most and whether screen exposure actually causes the differences researchers observed.

For parents, there is no reason to panic over every cartoon or video game.

But there is plenty of reason to keep making room for the physical world.

Books. Conversation. Outdoor play. Creativity. Family games. Boredom. Imagination.

And sometimes simply sitting down together and turning a page.

Because childhood shouldn't happen entirely through a screen.
